Demolition of Retail Park
| The redevelopment of Central Retail Park in Rochdale began with J Freeley Ltd demolishing two vacant superstores and two other premises.
The project involved the demolition and clearance of 100,000 ft2 of retail space, comprising the disused MFI and Focus DIY superstores. As part of the contract, J Freeley’s also demolished various other buildings on site. The eight-week project began with the implementation of traffic management plans and security measures. The controlled removal of large quantities of asbestos from the buildings followed. The demolition was carried out mechanically using excavators with shear attachments There was a strong emphasis on sustainability during the project with the various waste streams – including 3,000 tonnes of hardcore and concrete, metals, plastics and timber – all segregated for recycling. |
