J FREELEY COMPLETES COMPLEX RAAC REMOVAL FOR NORTH WEST HOSPITAL

J Freeley has completed the complex removal of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) panels found in two buildings within a North West hospital.

The hospital is one of three in the region to have appointed the demolition contractor for RAAC removal as part of a national NHS remediation programme.

With live properties situated next to each building containing RAAC, J Freeley implemented several measures to maximise safety and minimise disruption to the hospital.

Prior to demolition, a scaffold weatherproof roof was erected to protect the building from the elements followed by the installation of a crash deck underneath the roof. The RAAC was carefully broken out using manual methods and the works delivered during the evenings and weekends. Specialist equipment was deployed throughout, including vacuums and dust extractors.

“We have developed a safe system of work for the process, which includes a variety of measures to minimise dust, noise and vibrations, ensuring there is no disruption.

“Building on our experience, our latest North West hospital project follows the success of similar contracts in the region. The RAAC was removed safely and on time within 4 weeks ready for the installation of new roofing.”

RAAC is a lightweight form of precast concrete, which was popular in UK public sector building construction from the mid-1960s until the late 1990s. It was mainly used on roofs, although it can also be found in floors and walls.
